Testing of holes in concrete using gamma radiography
The technique discussed in this paper uses gamma-rays to pass through cubic concrete to obtain images of holes on film. Due to geometric enlargement of the images on film, errors may occur in the correspondence between the images on the film and the actual sizes of the holes. The gamma-ray locations and calculation techniques are used to acquire the actual sizes of the hole. Through the experiments, the technique in this paper was affirmed for testing size and position of holes as well as evaluating structural safety. In order to obtain precise test results, including hole size, position and accuracy, reference coordinates or points of testing concrete and the source position of gamma-ray should be made so that there are reference points on the film. At the same time, the reference points and gamma-ray source positions should be recorded to precisely calculate the actual size and position of the hole. The technique discussed in the paper is capable of being applied in the course of an engineering assessment. However, due to die range of the irradiated image of the hole on the film, the rim of the hole and concrete may not easily be distinguished. Therefore, it is recommended that the image be processed by an enhancement technique to obtain a more precise result.
