A new interferometric radar for full-scale testing of bridges. 1. Radar techniques and static tests
This paper describes a new sensor, designed for remote (non-contact) measurement of deflections on bridges and large structures in both static and dynamic conditions. The new system consists of an interferometric radar, capable of detecting the location in range of several points belonging to a structure up to 500.0 m distance and of simultaneously measuring the displacement response of these points with high accuracy. In addition to its non-contact feature, the new equipment provides other advantages including portability, quick set-up time and a wide frequency range of response. In the paper, the radar sensor and its basic principles are first described; subsequently, the results of live-bad static tests performed on a full-scale bridge are presented and discussed.
