Calculations of early restraint stresses of barrier elements made of salt concrete in a repository for radioactive waste in a salt mine
For the backfill of a repository for radioactive waste in a former rock salt mine salt concrete is used. Special barrier elements with specific requirements regarding the early age cracking are necessary to isolate the radioactive waste from the environment. The barrier elements from salt concrete will be cast directly on the ambient salt rock. This procedure yields to restraint stresses during the hardening process of the barrier elements. The planning elements were used to control early age cracking of massive concrete members to the barrier elements. The aim was to show the feasibility to build barrier elements without cracks. Furthermore the placing conditions should be studied and optimised. Based on laboratory tests on the salt concrete, numerical simulation of the restraint stresses during the hardening of the barrier elements was performed. The results of the simulation will be presented here.
