Fire and fire extinguishment in silos
A series of four silo fire experiments were conducted in an intermediate scale to provide guidelines regarding fire fighting of silo fires. The silo construction used was 1 m in diameter, approximately 6 m high and filled with approximately 3.7 m3 of wood pellets. The fire was initiated with a heating wire and after a preburn period of about 30 hours, the smouldering fire was extinguished using inert gas, and in some tests, in combination with foam. The tests showed that early detection is difficult to achieve with conventional gas analysis equipment, and that using inert gas injection is a suitable method for extinguishing silo fires. The findings from the project were successfully used in a silo fire in October 2007 in Sweden. Auto ignition occurred in a 8 m diameter and 47 m high silo filled with wood pellets. The fire was extinguished using injection of nitrogen gas according to the design guidelines from the research project.
