Studies on SCLA composite Portland cement
Ecofriendly composite cements may be obtained by partial replacement of Portland cement with certain low cost materials. Sugarcane leaf ash (SCLA) is one such material which is obtained by firing sugar cane leaf in an open atmosphere and then calcined at 600 deg C for 2 h in a muffle furnace under oxygen atmosphere. Hydration of 10 wt-% SCLA composite Portland cement was studied by using powder X-ray diffraction, FTIR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetric and other techniques. The results have shown that the pozzolanic reaction of sugarcane leaf ash increases with time. The compressive strength of 10 wt-% SCLA composite Portland cement at 28 days of hydration is comparable to that of OPC alone.
