Symmetry-based facade repair
In this paper the authors address the problem of removing unwanted image content in a single orthographic facade image. The authors exploit the regular structure present in building facades and introduce a diffusion process that is guided by the symmetry prevalent in the image. It removes larger unwanted image objects such as traffic lights, street signs, or cables as well as smaller noise, such as reflections in the windows. The output is intended as source for textures in urban reconstruction projects. The contribution is twofold. First, one detects regular structures using a combination of Monte Carlo sampling and user interaction. Second, one uses a diffusion-like process that tries to smooth across symmetries. It is a novel image processing technique that utilizes spatial symmetry in order to minimize asymmetric variations inherit in the image.
