Silane and siloxane based "integral water repellent" for cementitious materials
This paper is intended to review the different incorporation methods of silicone or silane hydrophobers during the preparation of mortar and the impact of the treatment on the reduction of water absorption by the set mortar. Whether incorporated as a liquid admixture into the wet slurry, or as a powder in a dry mix formulation, silicone or silane sealer addition leads to the same dramatic reduction of water absorption. Knowing that water absorption is a source of degradation for cementitious materials, silicone or silane based sealers prove to be a solution of choice to extend mortar lifetime. Limited impact of silicon-based hydrophobers on cement matrix mechanical properties were demonstrated. The limited drop of physical properties which is however observed at higher addition levels suggests this type of admixture should not be used for load bearing concrete.
