Improvement of shotcast material for torpedo ladle
With the aim to improve the refractories cost for torpedo ladles, various tests were carried out to advance the durability of shotcast mix. As a result, the following knowledge was obtained: (1) The causes of damage to shotcast mix are mainly crack generation and attendant exfoliation, and therefore it is necessary to improve the spalling resistance to constrain exfoliation. (2) In regard to grain size composition of the aggregate, shotcast mix in which the ratio of aggregate grain in the size range 3 to 5 mm was increased from 16 mass% to 22 mass % exhibited superior flowability and spalling resistance. (3) The addition of about 4 mass% low expansion chamotte raw material achieved an improvement in spalling resistance without lowering the modulus of rupture. (4) The rebound loss at gunning could be restrained by concomitant use of two kinds of alumina ultrafine powders of different particle size. (5) As a result of field tests using improved shotcast mix incorporating features like those mentioned above, the installation volume per TPL decreased by 23% and refractories cost were reduced by 15%.
