External cathodic protection of concrete-pad mounted aboveground storage tank - Necessity or choice?
Among cathodic protection involved people, considerable controversy persists regarding the possibility and effectiveness of cathodic protection of concrete pad-mounted storage tanks. For the tanks constructed on concrete pads, it is commonly accepted that the external corrosion may occur on their bottom plates through water condensation or migration between the tank bottom and pad. It is also thought that maintaining of a cathodic protection circuit by a safe voltage may not be feasible because the concrete pad has a high electrical resistance. Field data resulted from simultaneous assessments are presented and discussed in this paper to resolve controversy.
