Reutilization of APC fly ash in a pilot-scale road subbase: environmental impact assessment
Three road sites at pilot scale were tested from an environmental point of view. Two of them were constructed using a granular material formulated with 80% of weathered bottom ash (WBA) and 20% of mortar. The mortar (50% APC and 50% of Portland cement) was prepared separately. The third road contained 100% WBA and hence was considered as a reference. The environmental performance was evaluated by analizing the leachates generated by each road. The analysis was based on the concentration release of heavy metals and metalloids as well as chlorides and sulphates. The results obtained showed that immobilization of all toxic substances is achieved by the pozzolanic effect of the cement mortar. This is, to the knowledge of the authors, the only pilot scale study that is considering the safe reutilization of APC.
