What Have We Learned From 30 Years of Geomembrane Leak Location Surveys?
Geomembrane leak location surveys have been commercially available for 30 years. Because the surveys indicate the quality of the installed geomembranes, examining the trend can tell us how the industry has progressed in the quality of the installations. The leak location surveys have shown that the double wedge fusion welder has greatly reduced the number of seam leaks. When a geomembrane leak location survey is specified, contractors are motivated to be more careful in their work to avoid causing leaks. Leak location surveys also provide valuable feedback for geomembrane installation crews and heavy equipment operators. Engineers are now designing geomembrane-lined facilities to eliminate problem areas. ASTM standards have been implemented and improved to allow the specification of minimum standards for the surveys. Geomembrane leak location surveys have become faster, better, and more efficient. Nevertheless, regulations and specifications should be improved to require testing the only purpose of a geomembrane, which is to prevent leakage.
