Mine Water Treatment with Geotextile Tube System during Shaft Sinking at Goldcorp-Eleonore Mine (James Bay, Qc)
Goldcorp-Eleonore Mine is located in a natural environment (James Bay, Quebec, Canada). As part of their operating permit the owner of the mine, had to ensure any water leaving the mine site had to meet strict discharge criteria. Because of the mine remote location any treatment system would need to be easy to install, require minimal maintenance and be easily transportable. For these reasons the choice was made to treat mine water using chemical conditioning followed by geotextile tube filtration. The treatment process handles an average of 100 to 150 m³/hour of contaminated water, 24 hours per day, 365 days a year. During the 8 winter months snow and ice that accumulated on the top of the geotextile tubes acted as an insulation layer protecting them from freezing temperature. The system has been installed for 3 years providing highly efficient filtration as allowing the Mine to meet the discharge criteria.
