Development of defecation supporting system for the disabled elderly
There are currently 0.6 million bed-ridden elderly who wear diapers. They cannot take care of their defecation by themselves. To cope with the situation, especially for the severely disabled elderly in nursing care facilities, sensors consisting of SnO(2) semiconductive transistors for early detection of defecation and a defecation chair which supports defecation posture were developed. Discrimination between defecation and urination was difficult with signal output levels, but recordings of output signal had a prolonged high plateau for defecation and were spiky for urination. The chair was designed to be configured from a horizontal to an upright position controlled with a computer according to the programmed data for individual body conditions such as joint deformation or hemiparesis.
