Finite element analysis of composite sinks undergoing thermal cycling
In the history of cultured marble composite sinks, aesthetic appeal alone has been primarily responsible for success within the marketplace and cultured marble sinks have captured over 50% of the bathroom market. So far there has been little demand for improvement over the standard product. Esssentially, cultured marble has remained a low-technology area. Now, the likelihood of improving upon that market share depends on improving cultured marble's competitiveness with other commonly used materials. One particular durability problem is failure due to thermal shock. This paper analyzes the phenomenon of thermal shock. It develops a mathematical model which can determine the thermal distribution throughout a sinke undergoing thermal shock testing. This paper demonstrates how Finite Element Analysis can be used to identify high stress areas within the sink design to aid in improving the design for better durability.
