Failure of fills due to rain fall
A series of centrifuge model tests was carried out to investigate the stability of fills subjected to heavy rains. The fils were built with two different materials, an artificial mixture of loam with sand and crushed coal. Model tests were carried out under 50 g for the mixture and three different accelerations up to 50 g for coal. It was found that two types of failure appear for the fills subjected to heavy rains. One is the failure along a well-defined slip surface taking place in the areas where the wetting front has passed. The other is the failure in the toe areas taking place after the appearance of ground-water flow. The latter type of failure occurs for fills with small slope angle. The stability analysis considering the effect of the ground-water flow gave a reasonable result.
