Combustion characteristics of propane-air mixture over Pd coated honeycomb catalyzer
A catalyst localized on the cell surface of the honeycomb support promotes a thermal reaction in a space between cell walls at temperature well below those possible in flame combustion. In the present study, using the specially designed adiabatic combustion device, the dynamic combustion characteristics of the honeycomb type catalyzers coated with Pd are examined by making use of the test reactor which consists of ceramic tubes and a honeycomb catalyzer inserted within the tube. The ignition and blow-off tests are carried out with lean propane-air mixtures in relation to the dynamic stability of combustion, the followings are made clear: the characteristic region of combustion which may be divided into the stable, the metastable, the fluctuating, and the extinction regions; the effect of the coating state of the catalyst; the limiting conditions for the start of the fluctuating combustion; the relation between a period and an amplitude of the temperature fluctuation and the reactivity of the catalyzer, etc.
