Zinc wired rebar
The results of a study of a new method for protecting rebar from corrosion inside concrete have been shown. The rebar is galvanically protected by attaching a zinc wire along its length. The results from accelerated corrosion tests indicated that a zinc wire effectively protected the rebar and the zinc wire could last longer than zinc coating of equivalent weight on galvanized steel. The extent of protection and the total zinc consumption, due to self and galvanic corrosion, depended on the size (surface area) of the steel and the concrete conditions. Most of the corrosion loss is galvanic in nature for a steel width larger than a few centimeters. the protection efficience can be greatly increased by covering the steel surface with an insulating coating. Corrosion inside concrete is a complex phenomenon involving a large number of factors. Further testing is essential to obtain information on the specific effects of the various factors.
