Modelling and measurement of moisture transport in coating-protected wood

The most common problems associated with the use of wood as a building material are moisture induced or moisture related. This article describes an experimental setup used to monitor the moisture movement in wood that can be used to produce moisture profiles. These can be measured and calculated without making any assumptions regarding the dependencies of the diffusion coefficient or assumptions regarding the sorption isotherm. From these profiles diffusion coefficients are calculated as a function of actual moisture concentration in the sample. These results, combined with other measurements, have led to a simplified model capable of describing the moisture diffusion in one dimension and the resulting strain in coated wood.
