Exterior high performance wood coatings systems
Construction technique and design are very critical factors for providing the maximum protection of exterior wood. Water vapour permeability is of minor importance for the moisture content in the wood - as long as the paint film remains intact without cracks. Joint overlaps and end laps are the most critical areas in a typical Scandinavian wood siding. Pre-treatment / end grain sealing with a solvent-borne or water-borne priming oil is of extremely high importance. Only coating sytems with priming oil (+ undercoat) and 2x topcoat should be recommended. When the end grains are pre-treated with an appropriate penetrating 'sealer', water-borne acrylic paints and stains are protecting against moisture uptake as well as solvent-borne alkyd based paints and stains. Acrylic emulsions can be formulated to provide high performance. The water-borne acrylic based topcoats are the coatings which best fulfil all of the above listed requirements, resulting in the longest durability and maintenance interval. Obviously climate is very important as well (the wood moisture contents in all panels are generally higher during the winter 1997/1998 than in the two previous winters).
