Waterborne high solids exterior wood coatings
Akzo Nobel Decorative Coatings has developed a novel range of waterborne high-solids (WBHS) exterior wood coatings based on a patented, proprietary, hybrid resin technology. These coatings have excellent general properties that bridge a number of property gaps shown by other compliant coatings systems compared to traditional products used in this field of application. These coatings have a solids content of 70 % to 80 %, thus providing excellent durability, with a workable viscosity level. The coatings are combinations of acrylic dispersions and oxidatively drying alkyd resins. The optimum resin ration and particle size distribution are crucial for the control of a number of key properties. The general properties, application properties, penetration, water uptake, water vapour permeability, exterior durability, surface mould disfigurement, and market performance of these resins are discussed along with the advantages compared to tradition waterborne wood coatings and solventborne high-solids wood coatings.
