Overview of field installation procedures for paving fabrics in North America
The use of fabrics in asphaltic paving systems began in 1966. Since that time, their performance has been monitored and evaluated to provide a basis for better design and installation procedures. The fabrics used in this application are commonly referred to as paving fabrics. A paving fabric system consists of a fabric which is saturated with asphalt cement. Paving fabrics impregnated with asphalt function as moisture barriers against the infiltration of water from road surfaces and act as stress-absorbing interlayers between pavement layers. The key to obtaining optimum performance of a paving fabric system is correct installation. This paper is an overview of field installation procedures of paving fabric systems.
