Corrosion at surface damage on an epoxy-coated reinforcing steel

The corrosion of manufactured epoxy-coated reinforcing steel with intentional surface damage in an neutrally aerated NaCl solution was investigated. The progression of corrosion as a function of exposure time was studied with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Impedance diagrams were roughly semicircular with a large apparent time constant. Integrated corrosion rates from nominal charge-transfer resistance evaluations were in reasonable agreement with direct metallographic measurements of metall loss at the end of exposure. The results were interpreted with a transmission-line EIS model, proposing that cathodic reactions took place at external, semiconductive corrosion products.
