Evaluation of 20-year old rust preventative paints for long-term rust prevention characteristics
Long offshore bridges, such as the Seto Ohashi Bridge and the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge, are coated with long-term rust preventative paint because they are suitated within severe corrosive environments and are relatively difficult to maintain. In preparation for the construction of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge, NKK started to conduct paint tests in 1974 to determine the durability, corrosion resistance, means of application, maintenance and control, etc. of various paint systems by applying them to an actual bridge, namely the Shin-Ryogoku Bridge, in accordance with the paint specifications stipulated by the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Authority. In 1994, the condition of the paint systems in their 20th year of service on the Shin-Ryogoku Bridge was evaluated. It was found that the inorganic zinc-rich paint/polyurethane paint system remained in the best condition of all paint systems evaluated.
