HARNESSED JOINTS FOR WATER PIPE
With the harnessed joint method, buried conduits can be designed and pipe lengths calculated to resist unbalanced forces caused by internal pressures. The harnessed joint method has its principal application in water distribution systems where street excavations may endanger the integrity of a pipeline, or where limited clearance with other structures or utilities necessitates the laying of the pipeline in other than straight runs. A secondary application is on exposed pipeline installations supported by piers, hung under bridges, and put in structures. This paper discusses the mechanics of the joint force method, including various force systems involved.
