Urban Agriculture: A Comparative Review of Allotment and Community Gardens
In this chapter we explore differences among various forms of urban agriculture, focusing primarily on allotment and community gardens. Starting with clarifying terminology, we introduce connections to various other types of urban gardens in common practice. We examine the historical roots of urban agriculture to demonstrate its long‐term persistence, and we consider the relationship of gardening to food security across a sampling of countries, especially during the tumultuous 20th century. The multifunctional role of urban gardens is explored with respect to the ecology of the city. Various contemporary trends are enumerated with selective references. The discussion addresses organic gardening, intercultural gardens, and the transferability of allotment gardens to developing countries in greater detail, focusing on their significance for allotments and community gardens. Gender and tenure issues are addressed throughout the paper. The overall treatment is selective rather than exhaustive and is intended to provide the reader with an integrated understanding of the important roles played by urban gardening. We identify the significant differences that exist between allotments and community gardens as defined herein.
