Beijing Central Business District
Beijing's central business district (CBD) is simultaneously a typical and atypical example of urban planning in the booming People's Republic of the early 21st century: on the one hand, as a case study, it symbolises the increasingly liberal competitiveness between the country's major cities and the ongoing transformation from an industrial to a service economy, but on the other hand it also embodies an exceptional demonstration of power. The CBD bears similarities with the 130 hectares of the Paris Rive Gauche area and its eight subdistricts, but is still over three times larger. From the western perspective – and with the current lack of historical distance – it is tempting to perceive projects like the CBD solely in the light of drastic political and economical changes, and to overestimate differences rather than to acknowledge similarities with Western planning methods which surpass the often generic use of the word ‘globalisation’.
