Emscher River, Germany – Strategies and Techniques
The Emscher River flows in the highly industrialised and densely populated Ruhr region, in Germany. The industrial production had a relevant impact on the river, which has served as a waste water canal for decades. The Emscher River restoration and rehabilitation has improved water quality and environmental and ecological conditions. The conversion has also devised recreational areas, while providing favourable conditions for natural development. Along with the strategies focused on the damaged ecosystem, the creation of a new (grey) infrastructure has allowed the river's natural development. In fact, the restoration of the Emscher River is based on the construction of treatment plants, renaturation, rainwater and wastewater management.
