Emscher River, Germany – Opportunities and Policies
The restoration of the Emscher River and its surrounding areas lasted about 30 years. It resulted in the creation of the Emscher Landscape Park to preserve and reuse abandoned industrial buildings. It significantly improved aesthetical aspects and ecological and environmental conditions in a former industrial area. The International Building Exhibition raised awareness on the renovation process, while the German water management association Emschergenossenschaft has been its main actor. Sseventeen local authorities were successfully involved in the regional cooperation project. The local community also constantly informed to ensure consensus on the crucial steps, which targeted restoration and quality of life enhancement.
