Response History Analysis of Dams Including Dam–Water–Foundation Interaction
This chapter presents a substructure method for response history analysis (RHA) of concrete gravity dams. The discussion is restricted to two‐dimensional – plane stress or plane strain – idealizations of dams. By representing the dam, impounded water, and supporting foundation as three substructures of the complete system, it is possible to select the idealization most appropriate for each substructure. These may be the finite‐element model for the dam; continuum model for the fluid domain, unbounded in the upstream direction; and a viscoelastic half‐space (semi‐unbounded) continuum model for the foundation. The substructure method is formulated in the frequency domain to determine the complex‐valued frequency response functions, followed by Fourier synthesis of the responses to individual harmonic components to determine the responses – displacements and stresses – of the dam to free‐field ground motion specified at the dam–foundation interface. The chapter ends with a brief discussion of the EAGD‐84 computer program analysis procedure.
