Response History Analysis of Arch Dams Including Dam–Water–Foundation Interaction
This chapter presents a substructure method to determine the earthquake response of arch dams as a function of time. The substructure method is formulated in the frequency domain to determine the complex‐valued frequency response functions, followed by Fourier synthesis of the responses to individual harmonic components to determine the response of the dam to free‐field ground motion specified at the dam–foundation interface. The chapter includes all significant effects of dam–water–foundation interaction. Dam–foundation interaction forces are expressed in terms of the displacements at the dam–foundation interface by analysis of the foundation substructure, and the hydrodynamic forces are expressed in terms of the acceleration of the upstream face of the dam by analysis of the fluid domain substructure. The chapter ends with a brief overview of EACD‐3D‐96 and EACD‐3D‐2008 computer programs that implement the analysis procedure. The analysis procedure is developed first for spatially‐uniform ground motion and later extended to include spatial variations.
