A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Courtyards
This chapter presents the history and development process of courtyards. It then addresses changing trends in architecture and urban design of courtyards. Most apartment buildings sit on the block perimeter and develop a communal courtyard or ventilation shaft inside the plot. There is, however, an obvious alternative to this design, as found in Chicago, where the courtyard faces the street in a U‐shape. From an engineering point of view, the courtyard buildings were obviously less radical, but their interest is social as much as architectural. The style and size of the buildings varied from small to huge, from two to seven storeys, from Tudor to Art Nouveau to Neo‐Renaissance, but the general layout remained the same: a U‐shaped building whose symmetric wings touch the pavements in order to connect, at least visually, the attractive courtyard to the public space of the street.
