Courtyards and Passages
This chapter presents the history and development process of courtyards and passages. It then addresses changing trends in architecture and urban design of courtyards and passages. The term faubourg means ‘on the outskirts’ and was the general name given to the districts outside the fortified walls of Paris. The loose urban fabric of the faubourgs in Paris retains elements of its organic growth, reflecting the faubourgs' rural origins as lanes outside the city walls. The Cour de la Maison Brulée or Courtyard of the Burnt House is a typical example of a plot along the Rue du Faubourg Saint‐Antoine, in terms of function as much as physical form. From an architectural point of view, the courtyards and passages share several similarities with the cité typology.
