A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter includes a selective survey of different applications of urban morphology. It illustrates the ways in which the concepts and methods of the discipline are being actively used to investigate different aspects and properties of urban form. The allied fields include urban geography, urban and architectural history, archaeology and anthropology as well as architecture, historic conservation, urban design and planning. There are a number of different specific approaches to theoretical morphology based on the specific parameters that are taken into account. This very brief introduction will look at: allometry, morphospace and combinatorics. The urban morphological conception of urban tissue is being actively put to use within zoning systems of planning and development control as part of a move toward form‐based rather than use‐based zoning. The basic principle of a 'tissue study' is to use existing urban tissues to explore the potential of a development site.
