Case Studies
This chapter presents three examples of real buildings erected in high seismicity regions. The first two case studies illustrates conceptual design aspects and specific design details that are inevitably conditioned by the seismic action and corresponds to recent buildings that were designed according to EC8‐1. The third case study, designed and erected before EC8‐1 existed, illustrates the pioneering 391 application of seismic isolation, based on sound engineering principles and a deep understanding of the behaviour of structures under seismic conditions. All case studies show that in real life engineering, there is no such thing as a straightforward building project whereby all objectives and conditions are clearly established from the beginning. In fact, in two case studies, the design concept was changed in the middle of design because of the adoption of upgraded seismic standards and seismic zonation, therefore imposing difficult restraints for the development of the structural designs.
