A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
Exploring the Schism: Toward an Empathetic Language
This chapter attempts to understand the apparent schism between users who are disabled and designers and managers of the built environment. It presents a research study that is a beginning step toward the development and adoption of an empathetic language for the design community. The objectives of the study are, first, to qualitatively identify commonalities and differences in the way design practitioners, facility managers, and users who are disabled experience the built environment and, secondly, to provide a collective profile, or cultural portrait, of current attitudes and beliefs. The following research tools and techniques are used in the study: cognitive mapping, autophotography, and personal focused interviews. Five major themes were identified from analysis of the photographs and corresponding participant interview responses: quality of life, control and choice, sensory stimulation, meaning and values, and similar preferences and “ideal” environments.
