Economic Aspects of Saline‐Water Conversion
This article discusses the basis for costs which have been presented for both conventionally treated and desalted water supplies, and discusses several of the factors which must be considered in any definitive comparison of these costs. The most reasonable approach for comparing these sources of water would be on the basis of costs for supplementing current supplies or providing new supplies, not by comparing conversion with costs of existing systems. The article provides a standardized procedure for estimating conversion costs that was established by the Office of Saline Water (OSW). Factors of prime importance to be considered in evaluating any of the published saline water conversion costs are discussed.
