Active earth pressure under plane strain conditions
Chapter 4 covers the common procedures in practice for the determination of the plane active earth pressure based on earth pressure coefficients. The standard cases of earth pressure from soil self‐weight, infinite uniformly distributed surcharges, cohesion, vertical and horizontal line and strip loads are treated. The approach of a minimum earth pressure in the case of cohesion is discussed in detail. In addition to the classic solutions assuming the decisive slip surface angle from soil self‐weight, earth pressure formulas are also compiled when surcharges force deviating slip surface inclinations. Three subsections in Chapter 4 are dedicated to the special cases of stratified soil, discontinuous ground level and discontinuous wall surfaces. The last subsection deals with the distribution of active earth pressure.
