When people look at a house they usually consider the kitchen, the bathrooms, and the storage. But they should also be asking, “where do the neighbors meet?”, and in a community‐enhanced neighborhood, they will have places for that. A cozy and warm home sandwiched by a front porch, an appropriate interface with the community, and a back porch for outdoor privacy is possible only in cohousing and other high‐functioning neighborhoods; where community, sustainability, and beauty bear fruit. People who live in communities, neighborhoods, and villages that work do not need a large house. There are a lot of opportunities outside to build pergolas, gathering spots with seats around a fire, or sandboxes for toddlers—especially if people don’t use it all with roads and driveways as too often happens. People who have never lived in cohousing brainstorm bring out so many beautiful things/spaces/activities/common facilities during the design process.
