Common House Design
The common terrace of the common building is where neighbors hang out, but it also gets a lot of use beyond the common gatherings. It’s in a sweet location, with the best sun exposure in the winter, the best shade in the summer, and the best view. It should also be seen by as many houses as possible. Besides sustainability, the main function of breaking bread together is to figure out who wants to do something after dinner, like go for a walk. While working with Quimper Village in Port Townsend, Washington, the author and team were also working with two other senior cohousing groups to create new custom senior neighborhoods. Quimper Village was the easiest of the three to work with, as they had thoroughly discussed the issues and had both feet in the future, individually and as a group. The project went smoothly and it became a state‐of‐the‐art cohousing.
