An Overview on Fundamentals of Heat Transfer in Buildings
In general, heat may transfer in a medium or between media with three different mechanisms, including conduction, convection, and radiation. In a radiation mode, heat transfer occurs with emitted electromagnetic waves from a surface of a body to another one. This chapter discusses each mode of heat transfer in more detail. For the heat diffusion equation, in the case of a zero Neumann boundary condition, it represents an adiabatic situation or an insulation in buildings. The chapter focuses mainly on the free convection scenarios formed over flat plates. The role of Grashof number in identification of flow characteristics in free convections is essential and similar to the role of Reynolds number in forced convections. In general, emitted radiation is related to the spectral distribution in which it is generated and the directional distribution in which it is directed.
