An Overview on Fundamentals of Thermodynamics in Buildings
This chapter considers the first law of thermodynamics to the concept of control volumes. The control volume has an arbitrary shape while its boundaries are fixed or flexible with contraction and expansion. Mass and energy are conserved in the control volume bounded by the conservation law. Mass in particular cannot be created or destroyed in the control volume. The long‐term thermodynamic processes are favourable to be modelled by the Steady‐State Steady‐flow process concept. More advanced devices are currently used to measure the wet‐bulb temperature using other physical concepts such as change in length or electricity capacitance of certain materials when exposed to moisture. The psychrometric chart is a plot of the humidity ratio as a function of the dry‐bulb temperature, the relative humidity, wet‐bulb temperature, and enthalpy per mass of the dry‐bulb.
