A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
The World Trade Center evacuation process and people's behaviour were studied by the National Institute of Standards and Technology after the attack. Evacuation times in buildings were studied by various simulation models. The evacuation process in an emergency situation can be divided into three phases: recognition, reaction and egress times. Evacuation and pedestrian dynamic were discussed in several workshops organized by research organizations, universities, consultants and manufacturers. In tall buildings, the occupants use the stairs especially in emergency situations. There are situations when a building has to be emptied as fast as possible while the elevators are in operation. In total evacuation, the target is to evacuate all building occupants. Total evacuation can be initiated by a manual switch, automatically by a fire alarm or by a floor‐specific fire detector. In fractional evacuation, only a small percentage of building occupants is evacuated by elevators.
