The author of this letter corrects statements in the theme introduction, “Groundwater,” (Journal AWWA, May, 1985). According to the author, a sentence reading, “Among the methods of removing these elements are...lime softening, which may cause corrosion problems; and ion exchange, which produces a large volume of sludge,” should be reversed to say: “... lime softening, which produces a large volume of sludge; and ion exchange, which may cause corrosion problems.” Also, the author believes that a sentence stating that:”.. investigators at the University of Illinois found promise in regenerating and reusing the resin” should read:”...investigators at the University of Illinois found promise in reusing the spent brine to regenerate the resin.” In response, the editor states that the statements in the theme introduction are essentially correct as they originally appeared, with the possible exception of the use of the word “sludge” in lieu of “brine.”
