A platform for research: civil engineering, architecture and urbanism
This chapter discusses how the wide adoption of building information modeling (BIM), advanced computational design methods, digital fabrication, new materials and building technologies, have impacted the way architectural and design firms are operating, designing and delivering buildings, collaborating with industry‐wide stakeholders and creating the built environment. The chapter offers a cross section of cutting‐edge materials, building and design technologies, operational strategies for integrating innovation and research in design practice. Design firms that embrace change, take charge and create a culture that supports exploration, research, experimentation and innovation establish a competitive edge for their practice. The strategies for establishing a culture of innovation include determining vision and goals as they relate to integrating innovation into design practice; determining the value of the services and design outcomes, both tangible and non‐tangible; and establishing the research arm of the firm and integrate it with the practice, considering different models and research method.
