Backward Erosion Piping
This chapter provides an overview of the main findings of experimental work in the understanding and prediction of the process of backward erosion. First, an overview of the different phases of backward erosion piping is given and then an explanation of how this phenomenon can lead to the instability of the water‐retaining structure. A detailed description of the conditions that result in pipe development is given, based on experimental research, and a review of the design of experimental setups and test methods is included. The chapter also explains a model analyzing the progression of backward erosion piping, and discusses the practical difficulties in applying results to real levees and dams.
