The private home design must start with the group’s “design refine” of the common house. The common house design was intended to embody the Common House Program to the fullest extent possible. A common house will breathe life into the community, like no other building can. This chapter describes Haystack Heights Cohousing’s program and design criteria for their private houses. It summarizes the desired goals, priorities, and specific design criteria agreed to by the resident group during a programming workshop. With a high‐functioning common house in cohousing, you need less in your private house. Guests prefer to stay in the common house with its palatial amenities and more privacy. A life in cohousing is different from a life in a typical suburban home. Because of shared common space, private houses in cohousing are ample, yet more modest than typical single‐family houses. They provide a balance of privacy and community.
