Common House Workshop
Besides the natural affinity for cooperation, another reason that cohousing has been so successful there is that a centered, sit‐down, cozy dinner several evenings a week is such an importantpart of their culture. This chapter describes Haystack Heights Cohousing’s program and design criteria for their common house and other community facilities. It summarizes the desired activities, priorities, and design criteria agreed to by the resident group during a programming workshop. During the Common House Workshop, participants went through a process of brainstorming, discussing, and deciding upon elements that they want to incorporate into the design of their common house and other community facilities. In summarizing the community’s programming decisions, the chapter confirms that participants share the same expectations. The Common House Program and Design Criteria outlined in the chapter were informed by the Site Program.
