Penetrometer Test (CPT, CPTU, SPT, DCPT) and Variants
There are several types of penetrometers available. These include the static penetrometer (SP), which is inserted using a system of jacks; the dynamic penetrometer, which is inserted by pile driving; the dynamic‐static penetrometer (DCPT); and the piezocone (CPTU), which measures the cone effort and the interstitial pressure on advancement. The static penetration test or the cone penetrometer test (CPT) involves inserting into the ground a reduced‐scale pile with a diameter of 30‐100 mm by continuous pipe jacking, at a slow and constant rate. The CPTU test allows us to measure the cone effort with an electric sensor, and also to record the interstitial pressure upon contact with the cone, or immediately after. The principle of the standard penetration test (SPT) involves pushing a core drill into the ground by pile driving to collect a sample and to get an estimate of the bearing capacity of the soil using pile‐driving formulas.
