Fracture Toughness of Advanced Ceramics at Room Temperature: A Vamas Round Robin
The Versailles Advanced Materials and Standards (VAMAS) round robin on fracture toughness used three test methods. Two materials were studied: a gas‐pressure sintered silicon nitride and a zirconia toughened alumina. Consistent results were obtained with the single‐edge precracked beam and indentation strength methods. Interpretation of composite's fracture toughness was complicated by R‐curve and environmentally‐assisted crack growth phenomena.
