Effect on Filtration of Polyelectrolyte Coatings of Diatomite Filter Media
This article discusses a study to determine and evaluate the properties of synthetic organic polyelectrolytes for coating diatomite. Three cationic polyelectrolytes were tested and evaluated in terms of the amount needed to form a coating, the effect of the coatings on the hydraulic permeability of the filter cake formed, and the effect on the properties of the coated media of the pH of the water being filtered. Those coated media that were not made materially less permeable by the coating will be field tested to evaluate their effectiveness for removing suspended solids from water.
